Something of The Night by Paul Cave. apexpublishing.co.uk
Classification: Horror

Review by Mark S. Bennison

Something of The Night: an instant classic written with a hand of experience.
The book leads straight into a doomed world, which I suspect the humans deserved. Thrust into perpetual darkness and a barren surface where humans hide, survive, resource and plan in underground caverns. From being the hunter, they’ve become the hunted by a terrifying blood thirsty vampire enemy.
The plot thickens and exposes itself with surprise, horror, emotion and excitement through the twists and turns of quality writing. The humans could be saved by their enemy, chancing a fate worse than death. Nevertheless, if the humans live, then a chance remains for their survival and victory, using their fate to an advantage in a battle to end all war.
Could this be what is to become of the human race after the warnings from the planet of misuse? Something indeed will happen; is, Something of The Night, a warning to us all? A horrifying scenario. Be prepared to be shocked at how vulnerable the humans can become and how fragile the planet can be from the forces of nature.
Paul Cave has created a larger than life hero, Jacob Cain, whom deserves to be alongside, if not shoulders above, the screen heros played by Schwarzenegger, Lambert, Van Dam and Willis. Only, more intelligent. Mr. Flees, the pet dog, provides some humour to a dark tale as we get an insight to his inner thoughts behind the yaps and woofs! All the characters are well formed and you get to know them well by the end of the book; sharing their heartaches and delights.
Will God’s light shine again? If so, it should be on the condition that humans have learnt their lesson from the wrath of nature, becoming the latest hunted commodity in the food chain, quoting from the book: feed, hunt and kill.
Eventually, in the battle to end all war, an uneasy sense of compassion rises from the higher ranks of Ezekiel’s vampire army. And, Ezekiel himself. Rival factions remain hell bent on pursuing their lust for human blood: decreasing human population to the bare minimum. However, the humans, being human, have retrieved a secret weapon, which they rely upon to defeat the vampire armies, which becomes a twist of fate.
I could go on and on about this book, so good it is, tempting me to tell you the whole story. However, I’ll stop and allow you to enjoy the gripping tale of horror, bravery, emotion and passion towards an elusive new beginning from the darkness of evil.
Paul Cave is to be congratulated on, Something of The Night, which must be a five star recommendation and deserves to be a top ten hit. If not, number ONE.

"Goodbye sweetheart"

Farewell Blair.

"Goodbye, sweetheart," said Mr. Bush, with tears in his eyes. "Do visit again."
Behold, Mr. Blair did. In fact, wasting no time in doing so. What is wrong with email or the phone? Maybe, Blair is looking for some job prospects. Mr. Bush could offer Mr. Blair American citizenship then the vice presidency. Eventually, Blair could run for president ahead of Schwarzenegger. Oh! Silly me. He already is: of the World Bank.
"I won’t be far behind you, Tony," said Mr. Bush, as they sat in the rose kindergarten. "I only have a year and a half to go and I’ve lost my Tonto. So, it will be high old silver away on a blinkered horse with no direction but to seek out the John Wayne’s 100th anniversary DVD set."

Now, we have another ‘B’ in charge to tighten the chains around our wallets to pay for Iraq and pursue his policy of modern slavery in the guise of cheap labour. Maybe, we should move onto the C’s. Hang on, who are the C’s? Well, one follows a certain B. Um ... Maybe we shouldn’t, or can’t as Labour steamrolls a new P.M. into office for, God knows, how long.
That’s it! Let’s vote for God and destroy the whole world in the name of religion. That way, we will never find out who the D’s will be.

Hello again.

As promised, from my introduction, here is a 'taster'

Prologue from 'Miliyary Rule' (Apex Publishing Ltd.)

The President of the United States of America, Richard Burkhart, was sitting at his desk in the Oval Office of the White House when the Secretary of Defence, Paul Denny, entered.
“Good Morning, Richard,” said Denny, “How’s the speech coming on?”
“Good morning, Paul,” replied the President. “Very well. Just putting the final touches to it. This year of our Lord, two thousand and eight, will go down in history as the end of a great presidential era, lasting eight glorious years.”
“Yes, Richard,” concurred the Secretary of Defence. “One of great leadership, conspiracy and reward.”
“Thank you, Paul,” said the President. “I could not have put it better. It makes one feel proud executing the American dream of personal wealth.”
“I agree,” replied the Secretary of Defence. “We’ve done well out of our term in office. It’s a shame we can’t continue: now that we control the whole of the Middle East.”
“Indeed so,” said the President. “But even I can’t change the constitution. All we can do is tidy things up, tie up the loose ends. It’s time to think of my retirement. I have what I want from my presidency. In my speech, I shall announce that I intend to hand back the Middle East to an elected leader. But, of course, one of my choice. One sympathetic to western values. One sympathetic to my legacy, and retirement fund. It will show I have listened to political leaders across the World, and taken on board their advice and wishes. It takes a great leader to compromise and show a willingness to do so.”
“Undeniably, Richard,” said the Secretary of Defence. “I'm sure you will display your compassion when reading your speech. This will lay to rest the criticisms about the Middle East being in ruin and chaos, unable to mount any meaningful revenge or attack in order to regain control of their oil, and also, unable to dispel your legacy of democracy, though they throw it back in your face. They really are, most ungrateful. But in reality, Richard, I feel we may have a problem closer to home.”
The President’s tone changed. He seemed frustrated at the sudden switch of subject. “Oh, and what problem may that be Paul?”
“After all we have achieved, our generals may not agree to surrender the Middle East.
“I hear what you are saying, Paul,” said the President, with confidence again. “We don’t need to worry about our generals. The generals do as they are told. It’s the American democratic way. Yes, they can voice their disapproval, but that is all. Nothing to worry about. Besides, I shall be supporting my brother’s candidacy, and my speech today will help him get elected. It will ensure another Republican administration. That will smooth things over with them.”
The Secretary of State paused in thought: he’s just brushing it aside. “I admire your confidence, Richard,” he replied. “But have you forgotten the rumours soon after our initial invasion, some five years ago. Our intelligent agency picked up on discontent among certain Generals out there. I just feel uneasy.”
“Only rumours,” said the President, positively. “As proved, nothing happened. Also, If I remember correctly, General G. Mandeville, chief of staff to our army, quashed the so-called mutinous talk.”
“Ah, Mandeville,” said the Secretary of Defence. “He’s the one I fear most. He may well have done so, but, even so, if the talk was true, I fear he won’t have forgotten; kept it in the back of his mind for future use; something to take advantage of. I know him well, Richard. He’ll think you’ve sold him out.”
“Nonsense, Paul,” rebuffed the President. “I know him well too. No matter what the grievance and how bad it seems to him, he is ultimately loyal to his commander in chief. Now, I’ll hear no more of this.” The President looked at his watch. “My press conference will be expected to start soon,” he said. “All the invited guests will be arriving. The time has come to deliver. My actions and speech today will show the world that America meant well. I don’t want to leave the presidency as a tyrant, but as the one who gave hope and the American dream of achievement to the citizens of lesser nations.”
“Is your speech ready, Mr President?” asked the Secretary of Defence, quietly.
“Your appearance is indeed, expected.”
“Yes, Paul,” replied the President with confidence. “It is now complete after being compiled over the years of our great administration. The Lord will smile upon us on this day, Paul.”
“Never mind the Lord, Mr. President,” responded the Secretary of Defence. “I only hope Mandeville smiles upon you on this day.”
The President laughed. “Who cares what he thinks?” he scoffed. “He’s in place to serve me, America and our Lord. Come! It’s time to face my peers.”

introduction

Dear reader,
An introduction.

Welcome to my 'Author's Den'.

My name is Mark S Bennison, author of 'Miliyary Rule', which is a fictional political thriller.
This is my first book to be published, June 2006, and was born from my strong feelings of discontent and anger towards unjust political systems and dictatorships.

'Miliyary Rule', is set in the future of two thousand and eight. America has secured its place as the world's superpower, with total control of the Middle East and its oil fields. Absolute world domination is in its grasp. But the outgoing President seems to be losing his grip and some believe he is selling out.
The military, headed by a power-grazed general, have other ideas about the fate of the nation and are prepared to sieze control at any cost and establish a dictatorship. Their answer: military rule for America and subsequently the rest of the world.
In a tangled web of deceit and conspiracy, personal and selfish ambitions come to the fore. The line between friend and enemy becomes blurred in a battle for power. Who can be trusted, and will a 'David' arise to slay the dangerous 'Goliath that has emerged before it is too late?

The idea behind creating the Author's Den is to give you an insight into my writing, providing you with extracts from my next book, which is the sequel to 'Military Rule', as well as from 'Military Rule' itself. So, join with me in writing the sequel,

Military Rule2: The Return of Mandeville.

Synopsis

Military Rule 2: The Return of Mandeville, is a psychological political thriller and the sequel to Military Rule - Apex Publishing Ltd - which justifies the imagined future by going back to the imagined past.
Mandeville returns to haunt the writer of Military Rule, and his creator, as the Lord’s second coming within Seeker 1, even believing that he is God himself. Mandeville takes charge of the writer’s mind, life, and what he writes. The writer is enrolled into the ‘Network’, that Mandeville has created to control and manage the existence and information of the world’s computers, and those who use them.
Once the writer is in, he is lead back, by Mandeville, to the imagined past and provided with the information to expose the conspiracies of , ‘the brothers in arms’, which lead to the imagined future of Military Rule, and eventually the continuation of the new regime.

Well, that was my introduction of what my den will be all about, and hope it has captured your curiosity, imagination and interest.
